These high school Juniors Chloe attends Santa Barbara High and Amelia attends San Marcos High take a moment from their busy schedules to share what their life is like in and out of the dance studio. Chloe What was your initial reaction to being cast as Rudolph Iwas so surprised and immediately excited to play this fun part I was not expecting to have the opportunity to play Rudolph and Im looking for to the multiple duets with my best friend Amelia. How do you balance rehearsals, dance training, and school This is challenging but has become pretty routine to me now. I utilize a lot of lunch time and Sunday nights to get ahead and do homework early in the week. Even when I have down time at dance or in between rehearsals, I try to get a few assignments done. Amelia How are rehearsals going as Clarice Since rehearsals have started, my excitement for this role has flourished. I really enjoy dancing my solo and the music just makes it that much better. I also love that I get to dance such a role with my best friend. What inspires you to dance Alot of things inspire me to dance but the passion I have found and grown upon for the art form is what keeps me going. When having a life chaotic as mine, I always look forward to the consistency of dance and how its always there for you. What do you do in your spare time Chloe. Ilove to spend my spare time with friends and family. My favorite things to do with them includes going to the beach and movies, hiking, bowling, and picnicking. I enjoy photography and creating visual art. Last but not least, I love to sleep Youll probably find me adventuring with my friends and family. I always love a good, spontaneous adventure. This months Spotlight shines on Apprentice 1 Dancer Sydney Coffman, who will be dancing the title role in Gustafson Dances production of Thumbelina this weekend. Sydney shares whats going on in rehearsals, as well as how dance has inspired her. Congratulations on being cast as Thumbelina How are rehearsals goingIhave really enjoyed dancing as Thumbelina and Im very excited to perform at the lovely Lobero Theatre. Playing Thumbelina is a fun experience because I enjoy acting on stage and I love the character. The most challenging part of my role is definitely partnering. I have never had a partnering class so it makes it very difficult. You have to learn how to work together with your partner and make it look effortless. I never really realized how little things, like where your hand is placed and the distance from your partner in a step, could really make a difference in the way the movement looks. You also have to learn to trust your partner. If you dont trust your partner, it makes the step more difficult and it doesnt look as beautiful as it could. I feel fortunate that Bennett is my partner. He is a talented dancer with good work ethics. Thank you, Bennett. What do you like to do when youre not dancing Besides dance, I love to hang out with my friends. My best friend happens to live right across the street from me. She is a very talented actress and we love to come see and support each other at our shows. We can talk to each other about anything and understand each other very well. I am very grateful to have such a true, wonderful friend and I couldnt imagine not having her in my life. I love you Chiya What about dance inspires you My favorite part of the day is when Im at the dance studio. If Im ever having a rough day, coming to dance always helps because this is what I want to do for my career. Walking into class always gives me this special feeling of knowing that this is where I belong. Dance is a big part of who I am. Thank you, Gustafson Dance, dancers, and our talented instructors. I feel very proud to be a part of the studio. Getting to see the State Street Ballet Company practice and getting to watch the final product of their hard work is special. Im always in awe when I see them at the studio. I know it is possible with hard work and passion for what I doto make my dream a reality. Do you have any dancer role modelsMy dancer role model is Sara Mearns, who is a principal dancer with New York City Ballet. She really inspires me because whenever she gets on stage, she becomes the role that she is playing. You can also tell how much she loves to dance and perform and makes every step so beautiful and artistic. Any special items in your dance bag Ialways keep stuff like toe tape and my pointe shoe sewing kit just in case I get a bad blister or need to sew my pointe shoes. I also keep an extra pair of tights in my dance bag if anyone has a rip in theirs or forgot them. Isabel Clark February 2. Isabel is a senior at Dos Pueblos High School and a member of the DP Engineering Academy DPEA, as well as an instructor at Gustafson Dance. Isabel took a few minutes out of her busy life to talk with Spotlight How do you balance academics with balletThe demands of DP Engineering are not that much than the demands of regular high school. However, when I have to miss rehearsal for example, when I had to travel with the DPEA to the Maker Faire I make sure to communicate with Allison and Nicole ahead of time. What advice do you have for younger dancers The advice I would give younger dancers is that one role will not decide your dance career. Keep working hard and dont forget to have fun. What have been some of your favorite roles to dance One of my favorite roles to dance was in Kassandra Taylor Newberrys To Build a Home. It was a very emotional and beautiful piece and it was my first time performing at RDA. To Build a Home will always have a special place in my heart. What are your plans for after graduation After graduation, I plan to go to college and pursue a double major in Dance and Economics. Any special items in your dance bagIusually have around 4 7 pairs of pointe shoes most which I do not wear anymore and candy. December 2. 01. 6Clara Morando, Chloe Babcock Tori Fay. Congratulations on playing the part of Rudolph How are rehearsals going, and what are some of the challenges of the roleRehearsals are going great I dont have any part that I am struggling with, but it is a little overwhelming to memorize all of the choreography for Rudolph with The Nutcracker coming a couple of weeks after. What was the first role you ever danced in Rudolph What has been your favorite role to dance My first part in Rudolph was a Green Elf.
